Butler County, NE Barn Fire, Jan 1914
Columbus Telegram: Fire early Wednesday morning destroyed a born on the farm of Fred Cady, ten miles southeast of Columbus, in Butler county. A stallion valued by Mr. Cady at $1,000 and an automobile valued at $1,000 were burned with the building, and comprise by far the owner. The stallion was insured for $800, and the building, a small frame structure with a lean-to addition, was partially insured. The total loss is estimated at $3,000. Mr. Cady has no idea as to what caused the fire. Early in the morning he had been out that way to feed his stock. Later, while the family was at the breakfast table, the building was discovered ablaze. Mr. Cady tried to rescue the stallion, which was regarded one of the most valuable animals of the kind in this vicinity, but was unable to endure the hot flames and dense smoke, and so was compelled to stand helplessly by and see the building and its contents reduced to a heap of ashes.
