Burwell, NE School Fire, Mar 1902
One long remembered date was Mar. 31, 1902, when the schoolhouse burned. It caused great excitement and near panic until it was ascertained that the children were safe. They had been removed from the building in an orderly manner and many did not know of the fire until they were outside. This occurrence hastened the end of the hand-pump-and-bucket-brigade era and hurried the citizens into constructing a modem water system and related public utilities.
