Las Vegas, NM Two Car Crash, Jan 1992

Five people died Saturday night in a two-car head-on collision south of Las Vegas, N.M., State Police reported.
State Police identified the dead as ESTER GRIEGO, 38, of Las Vegas; MARIA BAILEY, 12, of Santa Rosa; DAVID ANDERSON, 26, of Dallas; and his parents, PHILIP ANDERSON, 59, and BILLIE ANDERSON, 53, both of Brownwood, Texas.
Injured were GRIEGO'S daughter, AMANDA GRIEGO, 10, and JANET LUPER, 23, of Dallas, State Police said. Both were taken to University Hospital in Albuquerque, where GRIEGO was listed in serious condition and LUPER was listed in critical condition Sunday night.
The accident happened about 9:30 p.m. on U.S. 84, about 15 miles southeast of Las Vegas.
ESTER GRIEGO was driving a 1979 Lincoln Continental and her daughter and BAILEY were passengers. DAVID ANDERSON was driving a 1992 Buick, and his parents and LUPER were passengers, State Police reported.
GRIEGO was driving south in the wrong lane, while the Buick was traveling north in the correct lane, according to the State Police.
State Police didn't yet know why GRIEGO was in the wrong lane. Both cars were heading up inclines and met head-on on a small plateau, State Police said.
Everyone in the Buick was wearing seatbelts while apparently no one in the Lincoln was wearing them, State Police said.
State Police said the roads were dry and the weather was not a factor.
