Mount Vernon, NY House Fire, Jun 1898

The home of General J. Harvey Bailey, in South Fifth-ave., Mount Vernon, was destroyed by fire at an early hour yesterday morning. The flames were discovered by Patrolman Clark, who sent in an alarm. William S. Martin, the caretaker, and a few servants who were in charge barely escaped death. They managed to save some of the silverware, bric-a-brac and painting. Two large chests of silverware were taken to the police station. General Bailey has been in Paris for nearly six months, and his wife is at the Arlington Hotel, Washington, D. C.
