Washingtonville, NY Train Wreck, Jul 1870

NEWBURG, July 5.---A serious accident occurred at Washingtonville, about 2 o'clock. As Conductor LAKE'S coal train was passing over the branch it broke in two, and on coming together again it was with such force as to pile the cars one above the other as high as the station. JOHN CROWELL, a brakeman, who was on the third or fourth car, was buried in the ruins and instantly killed. Conductor LAKE and his flagman, A. HAWKINS, who were in the caboose, were slightly injured.
