Asheville, Nov. 8.---The residence of H. E. Barnard in the northern portion of the city was destroyed by fire this morning shortly after 4 o'clock and damage done to the amount of at least $3,000. The family escaped with only a few clothes that they were able to secure in their flight from the upper stories of the burning structure. Furniture and personal effects on three of the lower floor rooms were saved. One of the sons lost a pocket-book containing money and checks, while the family saving were snatched from the flames by Mrs. Barnard before quitting the structure. There had been no fire in the residence since yesterday afternoon at 1 o'clock and the origin is a mystery.
