Atwater, OH Private Plane Crash, Nov 1963

PLANE CRASH FATAL TO 4.

Ravenna, Ohio (AP) -- Four men were killed when their single-engine airplane crashed Wednesday in a field just west of Atwater in southern Portage County.
The sheriff's department identified the victims as LOREN J. GATES, 32, of Buffalo, N.Y., believed to be the pilot, and three men from Memphis, Tenn. -- PAUL H. BELTZ, HOWARD L. COOPER and LESLIE BELTZ.
The Ohio Highway Patrol reported the Akron-Canton Airport lost contact with the plane shortly before the crash, indicating that the craft's navigational equipment had failed. The plane exploded on impact, the patrol said.
The four men had spent the day in Akron and were enroute to Memphis when the crash occurred.
