Cleveland, OH Card Shop & Paint Store Fire, Dec 1944

Fireman Frank Sarstedt, 40, of 13600 Lorain Avenue, was burned slightly while helping to extinguish a fire which broke out at 8:40 a.m. in Sandy’s Card Shoppe, 2068 E. 4th Street, and spread to the adjoining branch store of the Cleveland Paint & Color Co., 2066 E. 4th Street.

Battalion Chief Charles W. Rees said the blaze, the cause of which has not been ascertained, started in a rear room of the card shop and worked its way into a back room of the paint store. He placed damage at $6,000—$4,000 to the contents of the stores and $2,000 to the four-story building.

Fireman Sarstedt, Engine House 2,317 Huron Road S. E., was burned when he was caught in a back draft at the height of the blaze. He was treated for burns on his face and head at Charity Hospital and released.
