Nanticoke, PA Coal Mine Accident, Sept 1898

CRUSHED UNDER TONS OF COAL.

WILKESBARRE, Penn. (Special).-- Three men lost their lives in No. 1 shaft of the Susquehanna Coal Company at Nanticoke Friday. Five men were engaged in driving a heading on a plane some distance away from the main gangway when there was a sudden rush of coal down the plane, which caught the men. JOHN SHANNON, JOHN JONES and GEORGE MORGAN, who were working at the front, were crushed, their bodies being covered by tons of rock and coal. The other two men escaped with slight injuries.
