Fatal Explosion in a Mine

WILKESBARRE Pa Sept 13 -- An explosion of gas occurred at 2 o clock Friday afternoon in the Wilkesbarre shaft of the Lehigh and Wilkesbarre Coal company. [illegible] men were in the mine at the time and one of them George Ford was killed in the explosion. Isaac Jones was badly injured. The gas was ignited by Ford, who dropped his safety lamp from the car [illegible] on which he was descending. The excitement was intense until the rescuing party which went down was hoisted to the [illegible]. The brought up with them the six men who were in the slope at work, including Jones, the man injured. Ford's body has not yet been recovered.
