New Alexandria, PA Head On Collision, Mar 1978
THREE DEAD IN ROUTE 22 COLLISION.
New Alexandria - Three men were killed and one other seriously injured in a violent, head-on collision on U.S. Route 22, a quarter mile east of New Alexandria Thursday at 6:40 p.m.
State police from Greensburg identified the victims, all dead on arrival at Latrobe Area Hospital, as the following:
MICHAEL KLEMAN, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Kleman, Portage.
DANIEL THOMAS, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Amandus Thomas, Hastings.
WILLIAM GONGAWARE, 37, New Alexandria, RD 2.
Admitted to Latrobe Area Hospital in serious condition was BRUCE CHAPPELL, 25, Portage, suffering from multiple cuts.
State police say a van, operated by THOMAS, was traveling east on Route 22 when it crossed over the center line and struck a truck driven by GONGAWARE head-on. KLEMAN and CHAPPELL were passengers in the THOMAS van and GONGAWARE was alone.
Westmoreland County Coroner's Office reported the KLEMAN died of shock, head injuries and multiple injuries on the legs.
THOMAS received head and internal injuries, a broken leg and broken hip.
GONGAWARE, died of shock and neck and internal injuries, the coroner's office reported.
According to state police another vehicle operated by WILLIAM T. McGINNIS, East Liverpool, Ohio, slid into the wreckage but was not directly involved in the accident.
THOMAS, born Dec. 24, 1955, was a 1974 graduate of Ebensburg Bishop Carroll High School and was employed by the Consolidated Railway Corp.
KLEMAN, also employed by ConRail was a graduate of Portage Area High School.
