Disastrous Fire in Chestnut-Street Philadelphia---Valuable Paintings Destroyed---A Fireman Killed by Falling Through a Skylight.
PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 31.---About 7 o'clock this evening a fire broke out in the large brownstown building in Chestnut-street, adjoining the Continental Hotel, occupied by EARLE's picture gallery and WANNAMAKER'S clothing store. The loss is very heavy, a number of valuable paintings having been destroyed. One fireman was killed by falling through a skylight. The Continental Hotel was in danger for a time, but escaped uninjured.
