Providence, RI Bowling Alley Fire, Jan 1921

Three Dead, Two Dying, Eighteen Injured in Providence Bowling Alley Blaze

Special to The New York Times.

PROVIDENCE, R. I., Jan. 31.---Three firemen were killed instantly, two more are dying and eighteen others were hurt when the thin brick wall from which they were fighting a fire in the Washington Bowling Alleys at 99 Washington Street early today collapsed, burying them under tons of bricks, mortar and flaming timber.

The firemen were clinging to fire escapes and ladders, directing their streams into the blaze from Clemence Street, a narrow roadway on the easterly side of the building, when the crash came that carried three of them to death. The others escaped, seemingly by a miracle.
