Chattanooga, TN Bridge Work Falls, July 1890
THEY WENT TO THE BOTTOM.
THE FALSE WORK IN A BRIDGE GIVES WAY, CAUSING DISASTER.
Chattanooga, Tenn., July 28. -- (Special) -- This afternoon while a bent of the false work in the bridge across the Tennessee River at this point was being raised the one next to it broke and both came down together on a barge beneath.
SAM GIFFORD of Hill City was killed and went to the bottom. GEORGE HOMER and ALF REYNOLDS were badly hurt. All floated down the stream clinging to a piece of the wreckage until they were rescued by men in a skiff. The men are dragging for GIFFORD'S body.
The accident was due to the breaking of a long leaf of pine timber at least a foot square. All the men employed were experienced and careful.
