Houston, TX Building Fire, Aug 1884
THE BAYOU CITY.
WHAT IS GOING ON AT HOUSTON.
A fire occurred about 11:30 to night in the Third ward, corner of Dallas and Crawford streets, destroying one building completely and badly damaging two others. The building destroyed was the property of Mr. John C. Walsh, a frame building, occupied as a grocery store by Mr. Ben Silvermarle. Mr. Walsh’s residence, a small cottage adjoining the grocery store, was badly damaged by the fire; also, the Third ward public school-house, adjoining the store on Crawford street. Mr. Walsh’s insurance was light, but he charges that the fire was incendiary, and says he has good reasons to think so. The fire department responded promptly, and to their good work must be attributed the saving of Mr. Walsh’s residence and the public school building.
