Greenville, TX Henry College Fire, Oct 1897
A Couple of Fires.
Greenville, Hunt Co., Tex., Oct. 22.—Henry college at Campbell, eight miles east of here, burned down this morning soon after midnight. The fire originated in the laboratory and soon spread over the building. Prof. Bridges went through the boys’ dormitory, which adjoined the college, and got out all the boys and the dormitory was soon on fire, too. There was $12,000 insurance on the college and dormitory. The girls’ dormitory was not burned.
A house belonging to Mr. J. D. Thompson, next to the college, was also burned down. The Baptist church was in danger much of the time, but was saved by hard work. Several other houses near by were scorched, but none were damaged to any great extent.
It is reported that the college will continue in other buildings until they can rebuild. Henry college is one of the largest in this part of Texas.
