Flames Sweep Everything in Their Course -- Damage Small

EDNA, TEXAS, Nov. 13. -- Fire broke out Monday morning in the grocery store of E. W. Hobson in Clark Owen avenue and spread rapidly before a northeast wind down that street to the corner of Main street, and then whipped down Main street, consuming everything in its course. The total loss was small.

BAD FIRE AT EDNA

Several Buildings Burned

EDNA, TEXAS, Nov. 13. -- Fire broke out Monday morning in the grocery store of E. W. Hobson on Clark Owen avenue and spread rapidly before a northeast wind down that street to the corner of Main street, and then whipped down Main street, consuming everything in its course down a vacant lot between the Hamilton grocery store and a restaurant run by C. C. Coleman where the fire was stopped by a very hard struggle on the part of the fighters, who had only buckets and a chemical extinguisher with which to meet the flames.

The total loss occasioned by the fire is estimated at about $17,500, with total insurance of only $4,800.

The first newspaper in Edna was the Jackson County Progress. The newspaper plant, along with a large part of the business district, was destroyed in 1906 in the town's second disastrous fire.
