TEXAS TOWN NEARLY WIPED OUT.
Entire Business Portion of Burkeville with Exception of One Building Destroyed by Fire.

Rogan, Tex., May 14. -- Burkeville a town of about 500 inhabitants, situated thirteen miles northeast of Newton, and in the part of the farming section of Newton County, was almost destroyed by fire Sunday night after 11 o'clock. The entire business portion of the city with the exception of the building occupied by the Newton County Record, was wiped out by the flames. The entire loss to buildings and merchandise is estimated at about $40,000, with only $11,500 insurance.
The fire started in the business house of J. S. McWhorter, a general merchandise store, and there being no protection from fire in the town it spread so rapidly that not one of the houses in that section was saved. The origin of the fire was unknown.
