Edgewood, TX Private Plane Crash, Jan 1984
TWO DIE IN PLANE CRASH NEAR SCHOOL.
Edgewood, Texas - Two off-duty Marine Corps reservists died when their airplane crashed about 35 yards from a high school. No one on the ground was injured.
Killed were LT. COL. KENNEL E. MAUCLAIR, 46, and a second man whose identity was withheld pending notification of relatives, authorities said. Both were from Acworth, Ga., and were traveling from Kennesaw, Ga., to Cloudcroft, N.M.
There were about 20 students, as well as teachers and principals, inside Edgewood High School when the plane crashed Sunday afternoon, Superintendent Jack Shellnutt said.
They heard a loud sound but didn't know there had been a plane crash until they heard sirens and went outside, he said.
Witnesses said they saw something come off the plane as it passed a communications tower before the crash, said DPS Trooper Kenneth Richbourg. He said the plane banked southeast and crashed nose first.
Investigators with the Federal Aviation Administration were en route.
