Sherman, TX Ashmore Barber & Beauty Supply Store Fire, Apr 1936

Whole Sherman Band Plays While Flames Threaten Building.

Special to The News.

SHERMAN, Texas, April 30.---Only Nero played when Rome burned, but the entire Sherman municipal band furnished music Wednesday night for a fire that damaged the rear of Ashmore Barber & Beauty Supply Company. Rehearsing in the band hall in the second story of the building band members were unaware of the blaze until a hook used in lifting ice cream freezers came crashing through a window. The hook was thrown by an employee of the Ashburn creamery next door to attract attention to the fire.

The thirty-two bandsmen were led downstairs at the west side of the building. Smoke was penetrating cracks in the stairs and had filled the stairway as the bandmen marched out.

With firemen controlling the blaze in the back of the first floor, employees of the Ashmore company filled a rush order in the front of the building. Damage to building and stock was estimated at $3,000.
