PLANE CRASHES AT NORFOLK, VA.
AVIATION MACHINIST'S MATE IS KILLED -- RADIOMAN IS SERIOUSLY HURT.
Norfolk, Va., Sept. 24. -- (INS) -- Aviation Machinist's Mate PAIGE L. McELROY was killed and Coast Guard Radioman RUSSELL S. BANKER seriously injured today when a navy airplane, piloted by BANKER, crashed at the St. Helena coast guard base here.
The plane's motors went dead at an altitude of about 200 feet and the ship plunged to the dock, narrowly missing the coast guard cutter Sebago.
The plane was completely demolished. Guardsmen
on the dock were forced to scurry to avoid being struck by the falling craft.
Hospital attendants said BANKER has little chance to recover.
