Roanoke, VA (near) Transport Plane Crash, May 1943


Shaw Field, S.C., May 16 -- (AP) -- The public relations office said today confirmation had been received of the death of three Shaw Field officers when a small transport plane crashed into a mountain 25 miles north of Roanoke, Va., yesterday.
The dead listed were:
Flight Surgeon Maj. JAMES P. CITTA, 31, of Toms River, N.J.
ROBERT M. BELL, 36, Pittsburg, Pa., head of the field's dental department.
Group Commander Capt. JERE ASMOND WELLS, JR., 23, of Atlanta, Ga.
Officers here said they had no other details of the crash. The plane left Shaw Field at 11:30 a.m. yesterday with WELLS at the controls.
WELLS came to Shaw Field in January, 1942. CITTA and BELL had been here since shortly after the field was activated, officials said.
