New Cumberland, WV Tow Boat IRON VALLEY Explosion, Aug 1879

A TOW BOAT AT CUMBERLAND, W. VA., EXPLODES HER BOILER WITH FATAL RESULTS.

Pittsburg, Pa., Aug. 9. -- A terrific explosion took place this evening on the tow boat Iron Valley, upward bound, opposite New Cumberland, W. Va., seventy-five miles below here. A second explosion occurred immediately after the first, throwing the fragments of the wreck for a great distance in all directions, and destroying the entire forward part of the boat, including the pilot house.
Pilot WISE and the Captain's son, THOMAS PRINCE, and a MR. PROSSER, of New Cumberland, are missing.
The cause of the explosion is unknown. The engineer claims to have had sufficient water in the boiler.
