BURGLARS START FIRE, TOWN BURNING UP.

Wheeling, W. Va., May 1. -- Fire broke out in the large general store of JAMES HOOTEN at Rowlesburg, Preston county, shortly before 1 o'clock this morning and rapidly spread to adjoining buildings.
The whole town was aroused, but having no fire apparatus with which to cope with the blaze, nothing could be done. At 2:30 this morning word was received that a special train had been sent from Grafton, with a fire engine and other apparatus, but it is believed that before arrival the whole town will be consumed.
It has just developed that the origin of the fire was from a burglar attempting to blow up HOOTEN'S store. The B. & O. operator's latest report was that he was likely to be driven from his post at any minute. The loss is estimated at about $40,000.
