$300,000 FIRE AT WEST SALEM, WIS.
Entire Business Section Wiped Out by Conflagration Starting in Lumber Yard.
LA CROSSE, Wis., July 1. - Fire starting in a lumber yard this afternoon wiped out the business section of the village of West Salem at a loss of $300,000, and for a time threatened to destroy the residence section. Breaking out suddenly in the lumber ward of F. I. Boiles, the fire spread rapidly to the adjoining lumber yard of Sander & Cullman and, driven by a brisk south wind, jumped the North Western & Milwaukee railroad tracks and communicated to the business section. With great velocity the blaze swept up both sides of the only business street, making a clean sweep of all but tow business houses, which stood on the further end of a long block. Fire departments of La Crosse, Bangor and Sparta responded quickly to call for assistance and it was their aggressive work that saved the residence district.
