Madera, CA Car And Produce Van Collision Kills Seven, June 1949
SEVEN DEAD IN MADERA CRASH.
Madera, June 26 (AP) - Four members of one family and three of another were killed in a traffic smashup here last night.
Two other members of the family with four victims were injured critically.
Three of the dead were adults. The others ranged in age from 7 months to 10 years. All were from Stockton.
Deputy Coroner R. C. Jay identified the dead:
EARL KING, 24; his wife, DARLEEN ROSE, 19; and their 9-month-old baby, EARLENE KING.
MRS. EDNA CARNEY, 33; JESSIE L. CARNEY, 7 months; and WILLIAM LAVERN KAHLEY, 10; and DOREEN ELLEN KAHLEY, 4, Mrs. Carney's children by a previous marriage.
In a Dearborn hospital here are WILLIAM J. CARNEY, husband of Mrs. Edna Carney, and VIRGIL ALLEN KAHLEY, about 7 years, presumably Mrs. Carney's son by her first husband. Both have fractured skulls and possibly internal injuries.
The dead and injured all were passengers in an automobile which was struck head-on by a produce van on Highway 99, seven miles north of Madera. DAN ALLEN, 21, of Stockton, driver of the truck, told officers the automobile was weaving back and forth across the highway and he was unable to avoid hitting it. He was unhurt, and was not held.
