Key West, FL (Off Shore) Navy Plane Hits USS WRIGHT, May 1953


Washington (AP) -- The Navy announced Tuesday that three men were killed and four seriously injured when a target drone plane crashed into the aircraft carrier WRIGHT and exploded Monday 300 miles off Key West, Fla.
The 14,500 ton aircraft carrier sustained minor damage, the announcement said.
The drone plane, which had been hit by anti-aircraft fire at 1500 feet and again at 600 feet, went out of control and crashed into the carrier's catwalk, which extends along the sides of the flight deck.
The Navy listed the following as among those killed:
ORVAL DEWAYNE JOHNSTON, hospital corpsman second class, husband of Mrs. Shirley E. Johnston, Maryus, Va.
HERMAN LEE ANDERSON, seaman apprentice, son of Mrs. Eva Lee Anderson, Box 37, Powhatan, W. Va.
The injured included:
ROBERT LESLIE McNEAL, JR., stewardsman, son of Mrs. Louella McNeal, Smithfield, Va.
