Mendota, IL Tornado, May 1896

Mendota, Ill., May 18.---Special Telegram.----During the heavy windstorm of yesterday a tornado struck the residence of Jacob Fox, Jr., located three miles northwest of Depue, and completely destroyed it. Part of the debris was carried over a mile. The family, including six children, saw the cloud coming and left the house but a few moments before the storm struck. A. D. Hartxell was struck by flying timbers and badly, but not fatally injured. The cloud then raised and, coming down about a half mile distant, cut a wide path through the forest. The heavy wind did much damage to property in other localities.
