CRASH KILLS SEVEN; WRONG WAY ON I-55.
Joliet, Ill. (AP) - A car streaking along in the wrong lanes on Interstate 55 at a speed police estimated in excess of 100 miles an hour collided head-on with another car before daybreak today, killing seven persons.
Six of the dead were members of a family from Pea Ridge, Ark. They were ALBERT C. EUBANKS, 45, of Route 1, Pea Ridge; his wife, ALMA, 39; their son, ALBERT, JR., 16, the driver; a daughter about 3 and two sons about 1 and 7.
The wrong-way car was registered in the name of Frank L. Riha of Chicago. The driver was killed.
Sheriff's deputies said the Chicago car was traveling south in a northbound lane of Interstate 55 southwest of Joliet and nicked the side of a sheriff's deputy's car traveling north on the highway.
The officer radioed to another squad car farther south and a road block was set up. However, the Chicago car ran through the roadblock, sideswiped a squad car there, sideswiped a second car and then plowed head-on into the EUBANKS automobile and broke into flames.
Deputy Sheriff Karl Sicinski at the roadblock estimated the Chicago car went through the roadblock in excess of 100 m.p.h.
All the occupants of the two cars that hit head-on were killed.
