Hills, Ia. - Five people died in a fiery accident Saturday night on U.S. Highway 218 about two miles south of here, the Iowa State Patrol said.
Troopers said a 1983 Oldsmobile was heading north in the southbound lane of the highway when it struck a southbound Jeep Cherokee. The Oldsmobile, carrying two adults and two children from Iowa City, caught fire, troopers said.
All four people in the car and one of three people in the Jeep died.
Troopers identified the dead as:
TODD GRAHAM, 25, the driver of the Oldsmobile;
and his passengers, LAUREN BRENNEMAN, 33, and her daughters;
and SAMANTHA BRENNEMAN, 4, all from Iowa City.
Also dead was STEPHAN BINA, 30, of St. Louis, Mo., the driver of the Jeep.
Two people in the Jeep were taken to University Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City, the patrol said.
SARE LANZAFAME, 56, of St. Louis, Mo., remained in critical condition Sunday. KEITH SKILES, 44, of Cedar Hill, Mo., was treated and released.
Troopers found beer cans in the Oldsmobile, and GRAHAM had an odor of alcohol, Trooper Steven Van Otterloo said.
The vehicles hit head-on and did not go far beyond the point of impact, Van Otterloo said.
