Wellington, KS Locomotive Boiler Explosion, May 1890

TERRIBLE RAILROAD ACCIDENT.

Wellington, Kan., May 9. -- Just as a freight train on the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe railroad was crossing a small bridge a few miles east of this place Wednesday evening the engine boiler exploded.
JOHN MACK, the engineer, was crushed and scalded to death.
The fireman was crushed and mangled. His recovery is doubtful.
The force of the explosion destroyed the bridge and sixteen cars of cattle were thrown in the creek, fifteen feet below.
