Emporia, KS Two Car Crash Kills Seven, Aug 1959
SEVEN DIE IN 2-CAR CRASH NEAR EMPORIA.
Emporia, Kan. (AP) - Seven persons were killed Sunday in a two-car collision on a curve of U.S. 50 about 10 miles east of Emporia. There were no survivors. One car was returning from Illinois.
Killed in one car were MRS. OPAL EPTING, 59, of Burlington, Kan., and her sister, MRS. MARIE WALT, 62, of Emporia.
They were on their way to a wedding shower in Burlington for MRS. EPTING'S daughter, Linda, and Emporia State College Student.
Dead in the other car were TRUMAN M. HOOVER, 52, Wichita; his wife, 42; their son, IRVIN, 8; their daughter and son-in-law, MR. and MRS. BOBBY TOLES, both 19, of Wichita.
Sheriff Bert Johnson said the HOOVER car apparently had passed another vehicle on the long curve and was in the wrong lane when the accident occurred.
The Hoovers and Toles and been visiting Mrs. Hoover's brother Harold Akers of Peoria, Ill., and her sister, Mrs. Wilbur Heinold of Washington, Ill. It was a vacation trip for the Wichita group, friends said.
