Topeka, KS State Hospital Fire, Dec 1958
260 PATIENTS SAFE IN TOPEKA BLAZE.
Topeka, Kas. (AP) -- About 260 patients of the Topeka State Mental Hospital were evacuated without injury yesterday after fire broke out in a 70-year-old wing of the building.
The fire, controlled quickly, apparently started in a clothing room on the first floor of the three-story Woodsview section. The cause was not known.
DR. ALFRED P. BAY, superintendent, estimated the loss at $15,000 to $20,000.
There are about 1,300 patients in the hospital, including 340 in the Woodsview section.
"I hate to think what would have happened if the fire had really gotten started," DR. SIMPSON said. "Only the walls are stone. The inside is wood."
The displaced patients will be housed temporatily in other sections.
