Taunton, Mass. - (UPI) - The wife of a New Bedford man killed along with six other persons, including two children, in a head-on collision in "Death Alley" in Taunton fought for her life today at Morton Hospital.
Killed in the Saturday night accident were JOSE PASCOAL, 28; his 11-month-old daughter, PATRICIA; MANUEL J. SALVATORE, 70; his wife, GEORGIANA, 67; MRS. ROSE CARVALHO, 57; MRS. CELIA L. CRUZ, 42; and her daughter, PEGGY ANN, 11. All were from New Bedford.
PASCOAL'S wife, HERODINA, reported to be a daughter of the Salvatores, was in critical condition at the hospital.
It was reported the PASCOAL group was en-route to Attleboro to view a Christmas lightning display when the accident occurred.
The tragedy occurred on a section of Route 140 commonly known to motorists and police as "Death Alley." A trooper at the state police barracks at Rehoboth explained that the road is narrow in many places and has a number of curves and dips.
The particular spot where the collision took place was straight but the lighting was poor.
Some 12 persons have died this year on
"Death Alley."
