Clarks, NE Single Car Crash Kills Seven, Dec 1962
SKID ENDS TRIP HOME; SEVEN DIE.
Clarks, Neb. (AP) - A sudden skid on an unexpected patch of highway ice brought a swift and tragic end to a young Iowan's trip home with his wife and five children for a Christmas time family reunion.
Only the wheels of the overturned car protruded and they went unnoticed by passersby until nearly noon Saturday.
The bodies of DENNIS RANDALL DEWEY, 28, of Des Moines; his wife, PATRICIA, 26; and their five sons, RANDY, 10; STEVEN, 9; DICK, 7; KEVIN, 5; and DENNIS, 2, were found Saturday in their overturned car in a roadside water-filled ravine.
County Attorney William H. Norton said the accident occurred Friday night just south and east of Clarks. He said he didn't know who was driving. Clarks is about 100 miles west of Omaha.
The DEWEYS were bound for Broken Bow and a big family gathering at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alan Dewey. They left Des Moines about 2 p.m. Friday, leaving behind a Christmas tree with presents neatly stacked beneath it. Neighbors said they planned to return Christmas night.
Most of the highway was clear, Norton said, but near Clarks DEWEY'S car hit an icy curve.
