Washington, NC Business Section Fire, Jul 1911
FIRE AT WASHINGTON.
Building in Heart of Business Section of the Town Gutted-Damage Amounts to $30,000.
Special to The Observer.
Washington, N. C., July 27.-This city was visited by another costly fire, which broke out in the Morton building on Main street, right in the heart of the business section about 4 o'clock this morning and in a few hours the entire building was gutted by the flames, leaving only a few of the outside walls standing. The local fire department rendered valiant service and but for their untiring efforts a large part of the business section would have also been destroyed. The building was owned by Messrs. GEORGE O. and CHARLES L MORTON and was occupied by W. B. MORTON Furniture Company, the Tidewater Printing Company, WILLIAM KEAR Real Estate Company and Dr. L. H. MANN, dentist. The property valuation as nearly as can be ascertained was about $30,000 and the insurance only about $10,000.
The fire originated in the press room of the Tidewater Printing Company, situated in the rear of the building, and the flames had gained considerable headway before they were discovered. It was rumored on the streets today that it was the work of an incendiary, but as yet there is but little evidence.
