MARIETTA, March 31. -- Fire that raged through an entire downtown business block despite the efforts of companies from five cities to bring it under control, today left a total damage of more than $35,000.

The blaze swept through the Flat Iron Building, Central hotel and the three story Reilly bldg., damaging at least 15 shops and offices.

High water backed up at the rear of the buildings seriously hindered efforts to fight the fire. Companies from Parkersburg, W. Va., Williamstown, W. Va., Mt. Marys, W. Va., and Belpre, responded to the alarm.
