Enid, OK Air Force Trainer Plane Crash, Oct 1958
MANSFIELD PILOT KILLED IN CRASH OF TRAINER PLANE.
Enid, Okla. (AP) -- An emergency landing attempt failed at Vance Air Force Base here, and a young lieutenant from Mansfield, Ohio, died in the flaming wreckage of his T35 jet trainer.
The base said the pilot, 2nd Lt. RICHARD G. FRY, 23, was approaching a formation of student pilots to make his landing Wednesday when he radioed that he smelled smoke in his cockpit.
He was given clearance to land immediately, but his jet crashed less than a mile from the runway and burned.
FRY was the son of Mrs. Marie P. Wolf of Mansfield and Gerald T. Fry of Canton, Ohio. He leaves his wife Barbara Jo, who lives here. The couple has no children.
