Grand Valley, PA Tractor Accident, Sept 1948

Boy Killed by Tractor on Farm

John Daniel Lindquist, seven-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lindquist of Grand Valley, Warren County, was fatally injured late Friday afternoon, when struck by a home-made tractor on the family farm.

The youngster was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Titusville hospital. As he first medical decision of the death of the lad was made in Crawford county, Deputy Coroner C. M. Sonne of Crawford county has issued a certificate of accidental death.

The victim was playing with his three-year old brother, Carl and his 14 year old sister, Mary Ann, near the tractor. It could not be determined whether or not John had climbed on the tractor and disengaged the gears or whether the lad was in front of the machine when it began moving in some unknown manner.

The Crawford county coroner stated that death was attributed to a fractured skull above the right ear and other head injuries.

The mother, it was stated, heard her son yell “hey” to the other children, and then heard the screams of John’s playmates as the tractor ran over his head. Mrs. Lindquist, who ran from her home, to the scene of the accident, sent the children a quarter of a mile to the pump station where her husband is employed.

Mr. Lindquist and a friend drove the injured youth to the Titusville hospital where he was pronounced dead, upon arrival, at 6:05 p. m.

Besides his parents, John is survived by the following brothers and sisters; Mary Ann, Carl W. and Ronald E. Lindquist.

The body will be removed from the Tracy Home of Funerals in Titusville to the family residence this evening. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.
