METAL COMPANY EXPLOSION KILLS MAN, DESTROYS MAIN BRUILDING.
ONE OTHER WORKER IS MISSING.
Mars, Pa. (AP) -- An explosion touched off a fire which fatally injured one man and wrecked the Pittsburgh Metals Purifying Co. and Treesdale Laboratories near here early today. Another man was reported missing and one was injured.
CLYDE HILLIARD, 40, of Sarver, R.D. 1, died in Butler County Memorial Hospital at Butler about an hour after the explosion. JOSEPH BAXTER, 23, of Pittsburgh, was listed in fair condition.
A company spokesman identified the missing man as WILLIAM COOPER of Sarver who was believed to be loading a dry chemical mixer when it exploded.
Multiple explosions followed and both the five acre one-story block main building where the first blast occurred and a two-story brick addition containing offices were destroyed.
Firemen from eight companies were still trying to bring the blaze under control about two and a half hours after it broke out.
Between 30 and 35 workers were reported in the building at the time of the initial blast, but no other injuries were reported.
