Merkles Crossing, PA Train Wreck, Jan 1939

$100,000 Damage in Train Derailment

Trexlertown, Pa., Jan. 23 (AP) – Thirteen cars and the locomotive of the Catasauqua and Fogelsville freight train were derailed today at Merkle’s crossing, a mile south of this community.

The trainmen were uninjured.

A former railroader estimated that the damage to the 200-ton locomotive, and half a dozen of the cars would total $100,000. Three cars rolled into nearby Spring creek.

The 45-car train, en route from Harrisburg to Catasauqua, was loaded mostly with coal.
Trainmen expressed the belief the wreck was caused by spreading rails.

The wreck occurred about 100 yards from the scene where three trainmen were killed in an accident in 1929.
