STEAMSHIP ONTARIO AFIRE
Sends Wireless Call for Help from Off Block Island.
NEWPORT, R. I., April 8.--The steamship Ontario of the Merchants & Miners line is afire off the coast, between Block Island and Montauk Point.
A wireless call for help was picked up by the Point Judith wireless station at 2 o'clock this morning. The message said:
"Big fire below."
The Ontario is a passenger and freight steamer in the coastwise service. She sailed from Baltimore for Boston on Saturday. It is not known here how many passengers she carried.
The Ontario was built in the yards of the New York Shipbuilding Company, at Camden, N. J., in 1904. She is a single screw vessel, 292 feet long, 42 feet beam, and 15 feet draft. She is of 1987 registered tons and is owned by the Merchants' and Miners' Transportation Company of Baltimore.
