Hale Center, TX Two Truck Collision, Aug 1962
FIERY CRASH OF 2 TRUCKS KILLS SEVEN.
Hale Center (AP) - A butane tank truck and a pickup collided in flames near this South Plains town Saturday night killing seven persons.
A funeral home at nearby Abernathy, identified the occupants of the pickup truck as MR. and MRS. BILLIE JOE OWEN, a farm couple, and their three children, two girls and a boy.
The driver of the truck was identified as MILTON BOONE, about 38, an employee of the Hale Center Co-Op. His young daughter, SHERRY, 5, died in the blazing truck cab with her father.
The Department of Public Safety said the accident occurred at the intersection of two farm roads where high weeds may have hampered vision. Police said the pickup truck apparently struck the truck broadside.
The bodies of BOONE and his daughter were taken to a Hale Center funeral home. The bodies of the OWEN family were taken to the Joe Chambers Funeral Home in Abernathy.
